How 3D Technology Will Transform Business

Posted on Jul 31, 2014 10:54:05 AM by Sanjay Patel

Before long, 3D imaging—which requires a 3D camera to capture the 3D nature of the world—will be a core component of laptops, tablets and smartphones. While it’s easy to imagine how this technology might impact consumers, especially with Amazon’s Fire Phone, Google Tango, Microsoft Kinect and Oculus Rift making headlines, its usefulness for business isn't quite as straightforward.

But 3D imaging will have a significant impact on the enterprise. We’re already seeing numerous Fortune 500 companies and smaller companies testing 3D-based applications and experiencing very exciting results.

WIRED: The Laptop of the Future May Be Closer Than You Think

The tech industry has been abuzz recently with headlines of 3D technology coming to the smartphone. In February, Google announced its 3D mapping initiative with Project Tango. The new HTC One has a dual world-camera enabling some 3D imaging. We’re also hearing rumors about a new 3D smartphone to be released by Amazon. No doubt, 3D smartphones will open the door for a new wave of technology currently untapped by businesses and consumers. But first, 3D technology is expected to reach the hands of consumers via the laptop as a result of the efforts being led by Intel and leading computer manufacturers.

Education Evolved: 3D Printing in the Classroom

Posted on May 16, 2014 11:28:00 AM by Kira Salem

Last month, we kicked off our technology in the classroom series by focusing on the way FIRST Technical Challenge is driving interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. A much needed initiative, as the United States will need to increase its share of STEM graduates to about 30 percent by 2018 in order to meet demand from employers in STEM occupations.

3D_Printing_In_Classroom_2Today we’ll look at a new way educators are challenging the imaginations of students, teaching them to tackle complex problems, and instilling the drive to innovate - by putting 3D printers in the classroom.

One of the leaders in the 3D printing revolution, MakerBot, has developed an initiative called MakerBot Academy with a mission of putting a MakerBot Desktop 3D Printer in every school in the United States. Public school teachers can register on DonorsChoose.org to request a MakerBot Academy 3D printing bundle, then use the power of crowdfunding to raise the funds they need to bring the bundle to their classroom.

I spoke with Dave Zulkiewski, a teacher at Bloomfield Hills High School in Michigan, who raised funds earlier this year to put a MakerBot Academy 3D printing bundle in his classroom to teach his students to design, create and manipulate 3D objects.

3D_Printing_in_classroom_3Why did you pursue a 3D printer for your classroom?
I am constantly looking for new tools, technologies, and projects for the kids. I try to keep the curriculum as up to date as possible with the latest technology. Funding is always an obstacle, so the use of the fundraising program was a big positive.

How have your students reacted?
The 3D printer has been a hit from the moment we took it out of the box. The kid were aware of the technology and were very excited to give it a try. We are using the 3D printer with our design curriculum to produce some really cool prototypes.

What types of projects are they working on?
3D_Printing_in_classroom_5Students have created wind turbine blades, gears, small parts for micro-electric vehicles, and it has even sparked interest outside of the classroom. I have 2 boys that designed and created some custom iPhone cases. They began to lay out a business plan; how much plastic is used, how much does it cost to buy, how long does it take to print, etc. I have another student who took an existing design he found online for a GoPro camera case, modified the design to meet his needs, then printed it off to use at home. He is into cycling and used the case to mount to his bike.

A report released by the NMC Horizon Project predicted that 3D printing will have a massive impact on education, particularity in the STEM areas in the next 3-5 years. How do you think this will affect the way you teach?
3D_Printing_in_classroom__4The use of the 3D printer has already changed my teaching style and is motivating me to come up with some real world challenges to present to our kids. The printer can create prototypes to test, which then allows us to modify our designs and retest. This process will really enhance the design cycle and the success of our projects. I am hoping to add a unit to my architecture class that will allow students to design an item for a house or an accessory to an existing product. We are also looking at creating a new class in the future based around product design. My goal is to team teach the class with an art teacher and take our STEM class to a STEAM class (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math).

Email Is Out, Collaboration Is In

Posted on May 14, 2014 11:23:00 AM by Kira Salem

An article on HC Online yesterday highlighted how HR executives who currently use video at work say they will prefer video collaboration over email as their top method of business communication within three years, surpassing email.

This didn't come as a huge surprise to me and it didn't take me 5 minutes to think of a handful of reasons why email is on it’s way out:

1) Email Is Deceptively Time-Consuming
While it often seems more efficient to fire off a quick email vs. hold a face to face meeting, more often than not, the interruptions, task-switching, and time-consuming back and forth messages make it a much longer process that can actually delay decisions. Not to mention….

Campus Technology: University of Illinois Professor Places Herself into Flipped Courses

A faculty member at the University of Illinois has found the use of a technology that immerses her physical presence into her course presentations so effective, it has become "essential" to how she teaches now. Sally Jackson, former CIO and currently a professor of communication at the Urbana-Champaign campus, has been using Personify from a company of the same name since 2010. The program allows the user to "cut" out his or her body and impose it on top of the presentation akin to how a news person stands in front of a weather map to deliver the forecast, but without the use of a green screen.

FIRST Technical Challenge drives interest in STEM fields

Posted on Apr 28, 2014 11:10:20 AM by Kira Salem

Much has been said about the need to encourage our youth to seek out careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Demand for workers in STEM occupations is escalating, and according to a study by McKinsey & Company, the current flow of STEM graduates into the US labor force will not be adequate to meet demand from employers in STEM occupations. To fill this gap, the United States would need to increase its share of STEM graduates to about 30 percent by 2018.

Why CMOs and CIOs Need to Work on Their Relationship

As technology continues to infiltrate every aspect of a business’ daily operations, more emphasis is placed on the role of the chief information officer (CIO). More often than not, however, the chief marketing officer (CMO) and the marketing arm of that organization do not see the IT department as the fix.

Improved alignment and collaboration with IT, however, is the most efficient way to advance the business while giving customers exactly what they want. Unfortunately, while most marketing and technology executives recognize this fact, in general, alignment is nowhere close to being achieved.

Computer World: The Biggest Collaboration Mistakes Your Company is Making

Cisco Newsroom: The Coming Online World of the College Drop-In

Posted on Aug 4, 2013 2:17:00 PM by Kira Salem

Every day, students find it easier to take courses anywhere and anytime and accumulate them into a degree at a growing number of fully accredited institutions. StraighterLine, which Fast Company calls "An eBay For Professors To Sell College Courses Directly To Students", offers general education courses at $999/year for 10 courses.  According to the Education Advisory Board,  over 250 institutions across America, from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, have accepted at least some of these credits.  Without their captive audience, how will most schools survive?  One answer, I call "the college drop-in."  In the long run, the drop-in phenomenon should drive a very desirable revolution for educational institutions, for individuals, and for business.

Laptop Magazine: Your Laptop in 2018 - The Future of Computing

Posted on Jul 30, 2013 2:23:00 PM by Kira Salem

Think back to the laptop you had in 2008. It probably doesn’t look too different from what you’re using today. Sure, your current notebook is lighter than the brick you lugged around five years ago, and it’s running Mountain Lion or Windows 8 rather than Vista or Leopard, but it’s still a clamshell laptop with the same basic functionality. Fast-forward to 2018, and your computing experience will be radically different — but familiar, too.

Rather than phasing out the traditional laptop, manufacturers are shaping future PCs around emerging trends. For instance, the prominence of mobile devices has spawned thinner Ultrabook designs and detachable tablet-laptop hybrids. Notebooks will also benefit from perceptual computing breakthroughs that will push eye and motion control into the mainstream. Imagine looking at an app to open it or simply glancing up or down to scroll.

Enter Personify Live, a Web-conferencing tool that acts like a virtual green screen. Its depth-sensing technology pulls a presenter from his background and overlays him onto any desktop setting—such as a PowerPoint presentation—so the audience can see both the presenter and content on one screen. Techversity: Layer Live Video Over Your Content for More Engaging PresentationsTitle Here...

Posted on Jul 5, 2013 2:32:00 PM by Kira Salem

As a small business owner, you likely don’t have the time or resources to travel to around the globe or – even across town – for every business meeting. That’s where advancements like web conferencing come in handy, allowing you to “meet” with professionals without ever leaving your office. Unfortunately, web conferencing often comes with the drawback of losing the personal engagement that a live presentation offers. That’s where Personify Live comes into play. By layering your video over your content, it gives you the convenience of web conferencing without missing out on the benefits of personal interaction.

How Does it Work?

Personify Live, the main product of tech startup Personify, uses depth cameras (such as Microsoft Kinect or Asus Xtion Pro Live) to capture your movement, facial expressions, and gestures in real-time video. It then embeds you into your presentation, allowing you to interact with your content as if you were actually live.

Tips for Creating a More Engaging Marketing Webinar

Posted on Mar 21, 2013 7:09:00 AM by Kira Salem

In theory, a webinar is a no-brainer marketing concept. Backed by today’s virtual technologies, companies have the ability to promote products, services and the brand itself directly to industry professionals and prospective customers. In the marketing universe, it just doesn’t get any better than that, right?

But the reality is that a lot of webinars never live up to their potential. Instead of being insightful marketing moments, they become bland online events that often leave participants reaching for their phone to catch up on Words with Friends.

CIO Magazine: 7 CES Announcements IT Pros Need to Know About

Posted on Jan 21, 2013 2:56:00 PM by Kira Salem

There's a radical new enterprise-grade chat system that will debut this year, and Intel provided a sneak-peek at how it will work at CES 2013. Video overlays of meeting attendees (or whatever you are sharing on your screen) appear over the Web. The idea is to include the "talking head" of attendees on top of the subject at hand to combine video interaction and collaboration. This promotes better engagement between those in the meeting, as they are always up on the screen. Read More from CIO

What We Saw and Shared at 2013 International CES

Posted on Jan 11, 2013 10:20:49 AM by Sanjay Patel

The past week was an exciting one for us at Personify. We teamed up with Intel to demo our new video chat application – Personify Chat – at the 2013 International CES in Las Vegas – helping to power Intel’s perceptual computing initiative.

Following our demo at Intel’s press keynote event on Monday, we set up shop at Intel’s booth at the Las Vegas Convention Center. We made some great connections and had the opportunity to explore other new technologies on the cutting edge of the perceptual computing movement. As a whole, Intel’s perceptual computing initiative refers to our ability to interact with computers using facial and voice recognition and eye and gesture control. It may sound like something out of “Minority Report,” but the technology is coming to fruition for use by the general public, and we saw the beginnings of that at CES.

Silicon Angle: Video Chat Looks More and More Like a Service at CES 2013

Posted on Jan 8, 2013 2:46:00 PM by Kira Salem

Having an internet connected device doesn’t really mean a thing if you don’t use it to access content or connect with others.  And with ready access to wireless networks, BYOD and the resurgence of chat services, it’s no surprise that CES 2013 has brought a range of new video chat tools to the market.  Here’s a few that made it onto our radar.

Personify Inc. is taking video chat to a whole new level with Personify Chat.  The service allows you to share your environment with people,  so you share a similar experience.  For lack of a better explanation  “It’s like a virtual green screen — almost as if you’re the weatherman with all the content in the world as your backdrop,” Personify CEO and co-founder Sanjay J. Patel describes.

Venture Beat: A year later, Intel’s ‘perceptual computing’ initiative is becoming more concrete

Posted on Jan 7, 2013 2:54:00 PM by Kira Salem

Intel says it is making progress on its “perceptual computing” initiative to make computers more intuitive to control.

Last year, Intel talked about how it wanted to go beyond touchscreens and equip everyday computers such as desktops and laptops with technologies such as gesture control, face recognition, voice recognition, and eye control. This year, those initiatives have all taken shape, said Kirk Skaugen, the vice president of the PC client group at Intel, in a press event at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today.
